Chapter
Sixteen
Ange comes out of her twenty minute hot shower, clad in pants and undershirt amidst a cloud of steam, to find Meisha standing by the door, presenting a phone to her. Meisha's phone, Ange sees, towelling her hair. Meisha's face is hard to read, as always.
Ange takes the phone. "Pronto?"
A long pause from the other end. Ange frowns, putting the phone between cheek and shoulder so she can get a brush through her crazy hair. Then, "Hi Ange." A very familiar voice.
Ange's eyes go wide. She ends the call and gives it back to Meisha. "I don't want to talk to him."
Meisha sighs, and presses call. Without waiting, she tells it, "I said she'd hang up on you. Give it a moment, Jamie." And ends the call again. Meisha can maintain that connection whatever button she presses, Ange knows. She's just putting it on mute.
"No!" Ange glares at her. "Assolutamente no!" She strides into the motel bedroom... and is immediately reminded to keep her voice down, by Natalie lying asleep beneath the covers alongside Rigo, who is curled atop his blankets.
She reverses and strides back to the bathroom, grabbing Meisha's arm and pulling her in as well. Closes the door behind them, in the warm, thick air.
"Ange, you have to talk to him." Always calm, logical Meisha. Ange is in no mood for it.
"You don't even know he wasn't behind this attack!" she accuses. "You know he hates Eli!"
"He admits he was," says Meisha.
Ange blinks at her. Does a hard double-take, feeling the red mist descend. "He fucking what?"
"He admits he was," Meisha repeats, attempting calm. "Ange, talk to him. He says the goal was to capture Eli. They insisted he was alone. But Jamie found out that a bunch of the people they sent were killed by swords and magic. He figured it had to be us."
"Oh precious boy!" Ange snarls, hands in her hair. "How many cursed lives before this one do you have to screw up to be born so stupid!"
"Ange, it doesn't matter how angry you are!" Now Meisha is angry. That's rare. Stern, like an older sister to a ridiculous younger one. "He's with them, Ange! He can tell us things! Use your head!" The tension causes her pain at her injured stomach. Ange sees the wince, and feels guilty.
She mutters several very bad Italian words, and snatches the phone back. Presses call. "Pronto!"
"Ange, if I'd known you were there, I'd have stopped them myself." Jamie sounds angry too. Wonderful. Everyone's angry, it's like an Ulani general meeting.
"Yes, well you're going to have to learn how friendships work, Jamie! Because I kill people who come after my friends, and Eli's one of them!"
Meisha throws up her hands in exasperation. Ange knows all about Tori. She knows that Eli killed her, however much he protests self-defence. How would she feel, about the man who'd done that, if Tori were her sister? The silence from the other end is almost enough to make Ange wish she hadn't said it.
